Editor's Note: Past NCA Presidents Pam Markel and Dwayne Ibsen have been writing about the association's history. This year they are writing about the Creative Style Show, an event that took place at the annual convention. Click here to read the previous installment of this series.
The 1983 Creative Style Show was deemed very successful. There were ten participants that contributed elegant and versatile costumes to this fascinating portion of the National Costumers Association Convention. Mary Lou Landes of Landes Costumes in Indianapolis, Indiana was the Chairman.
The participating shops were:
- Fantasy World – David Johnson
- Bittner’s Costume – Jeanette Rubenstein
- Lown Costumes – Joh Lown
- Costumes by Margie – James Bliss
- Jill’s Costume Shop – Barbara Moore
- Act 1 Costumes- Bernice Jacobson
- The Costume Shop – Gaylen Patterson
- Costume Holiday House – LaMar Kerns
- The Costume Bazaar – Bobby Russell
- Anderson Costumes – Sherry Van Hook
Many of these creative entrees exhibited the imaginative use of interchangeable sleeves and added accessories to change the style of the dress or costume.
Mary Lou Landes stated: “The material she sent to ten firms this year, leaned toward the theatrical more than the masquerade side. She was anxious to see what the group had made.”
Note: For the years of 1981-1982, no record of the Creative Style Show could be found. The only historical information was a picture of the costumes in the 1982 show. If anyone has any information to share, please contact Pam Markel at docmarkel@aol.com.
