Editor's Note: NCA Member Theatre House is for sale. Owner Marty Boyer asked for our help in publicizing the business opportunity. He provided the information below.
Up for sale for the first time is Theatre House, a theatrical supply company in Covington, Kentucky, started in 1955 selling costumes, fabrics, makeup, wigs, and accessories. Historically, a one-time mail-order organization, today Theatre House is a full e-commerce operation with approximately 5,000 active items in inventory. Theatre House serves B2C and B2B audiences, with school systems (B2B) representing the largest segment. Theatre House has approved vendor status in tens of thousands of schools, including the country’s largest K-12 school systems like New York City, Philadelphia Public Schools, Los Angeles Unified School District, and many of the largest aggregate districts in Texas. These high-barrier customers are also recurring customers representing more than half of our revenues since 2018. To round out our business, we serve B2C marketplaces via our own commerce website, retail, Amazon, and Walmart marketplaces.
Theatre House comes ready to grow with an existing audience and portable commerce platform that has made e-commerce viable for anyone and ready to help the business scale. We have a complex commerce, CRM, accounting, and inventory management system that is ready to go. It’s highly integrated for purchase order processing, bill payment, accounts receivable and payable, plus integrated into our web presence. External integrations with Walmart and Amazon make creating a distribution mechanism on other websites easy, while inventory is managed centrally. Our technical infrastructure helps deliver packages nationwide on an average of 2.3 days with greater than 98% same-day ship rate and less than 4% return rate. Our marketing includes just-in-time search marketing, social media, automated B2B CRM and B2C CRM. Our technical stack allows us to punch significantly above our weight class while reaping great efficiency with our staff.
For our audience, Theatre House comes with tens of thousands of school relationships in place, providing the highest of prizes, recurring revenue. Theatre House can be taken anywhere in the United States. The business has been operated by a “tech dude” that comes from Fortune 500 technology experiences and who created best practices at the organization. Theatre House has removed the complexity of technical “ownership” and created a platform that allows for a focus on the business.
Why sell?
Tech dudes don’t know theatre (at least this one doesn’t). The operating individual, Marty Boyer, is a technical oriented individual. He is prized for assembling systems, technology, and solutions. That means he knows a lot about business and tech but needs someone on the theatrical side to help scale at this point. He will be available through a transitional period as part of the sale.
Other details:
- The business will be free and clear of debt, domain ownership and includes existing inventory.
- Real estate is available for up to one additional year with purchase.
- Owner is open to scalable models, adjacent company support and other ideas.
- This is not a short-sale opportunity—the business is solvent.
